He died on 29 Sep 855 in Abbey of Pruem, Germany. He was the King of Italy 817-855; Emperor 840-855. Abdicated in 855 and became a monk.

He was married to Ermengarde (daughter of Count Hugh II) on 15 Oct 821. Ermengarde died on 20 Mar 850/51.
